Sandro Palla was born in Locarno, Switzerland. After completing his classical studies, he graduated in dentistry from the University of Zurich and pursued further specialist training in Switzerland and the United States. He was later appointed Full Professor at the University of Zurich, where he is now Professor Emeritus.

At the end of his academic career, his photography underwent a transformation, moving away from its documentary origins towards a more expressive dimension. Driven by a deep curiosity about human life, he captures figures, faces, traditions, and cultures under diverse skies. His artistic vision was strongly influenced by his father, His artistic vision was strongly influenced by his father, whose lifelong passion for painting developed into a profound artistic commitment after retirement.​

His work explores the boundary between photography and painting. Starting from his own photographic archive, he selects fragments of different images and transforms them through masking, resizing, distortion, tonal and colour remapping, and carefully adjusted transparency. These elements are then superimposed and reassembled in layers, becoming a kind of digital brushstroke. Sandro Palla calls this personal creative process “PhotoBrush”.​

​​Through the interplay of light, colour, form and transparency, the original photographs acquire new relationships and meanings. Figures and places from different moments and cultural contexts coexist within the same composition, creating images that appear simultaneously real and imagined. Their photographic origins remain perceptible, yet the final works have the atmosphere, visual richness and expressive freedom of paintings.​

Rather than simply documenting a moment, his images seek to evoke emotions, memories and associations. Reality is decomposed and reconstructed into chromatic suggestions in which forms emerge, overlap and sometimes dissolve. The result is a painterly and often dreamlike visual language that invites the viewer to move beyond the immediately visible and form a personal interpretation of the work.
